Andrea Juan has been developing her artwork for more than fifteen years in relation to the environment and climate change.
She started in Patagonia, Argentina, where she recorded the melting of the glaciers, which she later transformed into an installation, which was very successful at Fundación Telefónica: "Theory of a Catastrophe". Then, in 2005, she began her "Antarctica Project" driven by the need to see and tell the consequences that climate change was producing in the Antarctic peninsula.
Andrea worked side by side with Argentine scientists. They were the ones who confirmed the retraction of the glaciers, the disappearance of the ice barriers, the decrease of the frozen mass and the melting of the permafrost that releases to the atmosphere huge amounts of greenhouse gas methane that contribute to the global warming.
She transformed the scientists' reports into visual poetry. She transformed the catastrophic visions of these investigations into beautiful artworks of vibrant colors. Not to obviate the reality, but to provoke, through beauty and the senses, reflection and change of attitude.
Andrea has spent 12 summers in Antarctica witnessing this problem and telling it through her artworks.
In the talk, she offered the point of view of an artist who has transformed her artwork to be a wake-up call on the consequences of climate change.
The talk was part of the exhibition DOS MUNDOS UN SOLO PLANETA organized by the General Directorate of Innovation and Educational Centers and the General Directorate of Environment. This activity is part of the cycle "Nature. The environment and the landscape "organized by the Port Authority of Santander.
