In 2004, visual artist Andrea Juan began an artistic project that was born from her interest in investigating the effects of climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Andrea Juan experimented and developed a new way of reflecting on the environment, making scientific work interact with art, developing her work in the natural environment.
Then she hoped that other artists would also have this possibility and that other disciplines would join in and she created the Art Residency in Antarctica, dependent on the National Antarctic Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic.
This was the first Art Residency on the Antarctic continent that allowed artists from all over the world to participate in it thanks to the international cooperation program developed for this purpose.
From the works developed in this residency, to which were added others generated by other artists participating in residencies in other international bases, Sur Polar emerged, an international network of environmental artists that began with the Art in Antarctica program.
The Art in Antarctica Program ended in 2016 was the origin of the current SM Pro Art programs: Traces, NAT Art Residency and Art in the Origin.
In Sur Polar, a large number of artists converge from all latitudes with the ideal of adding their projects to this particular international network of sensitive beings committed to the utopia of a sustainable world, to show everyone, through the arts, that this world is possible.
This network of committed artists continues to multiply in new places on the planet, and every year new enthusiastic artists join this fantastic utopia.
